Welcome! You've arrived at award-winning author Marcel Gagné's personal Website. I am the author of the "Moving to Linux" series of books, a regular columnist for several tech magazines, a public speaker, radio and television personality, and a well known voice in the Linux and open source universe. I created the famous (perhaps infamous) Cooking With Linux which ran for ten years in the Linux Journal. I'm also a published science fiction author and editor, a onetime Editor in Chief, a pilot, a former Top 40 disc jockey, and I fold a mean origami T-Rex.  This site is home to my insights, opinions, gripes, brags, tech stuff, and whatever else comes to mind when I have the time or the inclination to publish it.

Words have power. Or so we're told. It's an old expression and with the passage of time, the expression must have increased in value so that it is now undeniably true, having, with said passage of time, acquired some amount of wisdom along the way.  In much the same way that dirt builds up on your car as you drive it.

Words have power.

Traditions Worth Keeping

Android and the Need for root

I picked up an ASUS ME176C MeMO Pad 16GB Android tablet for my son at the local Future Shop. It's a great little tablet and awesome value at $149 with a beautiful screen and super peppy performance courtesy of the new Intel Atom BayTrail-T Z3745 Quad Core processor with 1GB RAM. Overall, I think it's awesome and yet, I'm not 100% happy, even it it *his tablet*.

The Idea Bank

There should be a idea bank, where you can drop off your extra ideas and get paid some small stipend for it. Like a sperm bank except for ideas which, of course, means it's just like a sperm bank only with ideas instead of sperm.

Not Quoting Mark Twain

I took a break from my morning work to stretch and add a few steps to my FitBit (have to get those 10,000 steps in, you know). I picked up my Android tablet, fired up my Kobo eBook reader app, and started walking around the house, going up and down steps, and searching for some enlightenment, or maybe just entertainment, as I walked.

Target Tells Gun Owners to Keep Their Guns Out of the Stores

Over the last few days, I've made fun of Target for its policy to allow open-carry gun owners to parade the store while simultaneously driving away a few mothers protesting outside their locations.

Goodbye OpenSUSE. Hello Fedora.

It seems obvious that I just can't commit. I just can't commit to a single Linux distribution. I run different flavors on different systems, but even on my desktop, relationships are short-lived. Most recently, I was running OpenSUSE and you know, it was going along pretty good. We seemed like a good fit. And then, one day, I find myself looking at other desktops.

No One To Vote For

As we head into a provincial election, I hear once again the voices of people saying they are tired of their politicians and because of that, there is no point in voting. Some claim that spoiling a ballot is a powerful message to those in power. Others will just stay home, suggesting that nothing changes anyhow.

Despicable Me Minion Rush Bonus Codes

I've got two kids who are huge fans of the tablet game, Minion Rush, also known as Despicable Me and, of course, based on the animated movie by the same name.

And I would walk a thousand miles

A couple of years ago, I decided that I was going to get in shape. I wasn't in what I'd call terrible shape, but I wasn't 25 years old anymore either.
